Now I am a Licensed Psychologist and Life Coach with over 30 years of experience in providing high-quality, integrative, person-centered individual, couples, group counseling, therapy, and personal coaching.
I enjoy working with individuals and couples, and adore group psychotherapy, as there's a special synergy when a number of us come together in vulnerability and courage, supporting each other in experimenting with new behaviors, and inviting our best selves to emerge. I also offer consultation for helping professionals, assisting them navigate tricky client and patient situations and maintain balance between their personal and professional lives.
Virtually all populations intrigue me, but I have a special place in my heart for highly sensitive people (HSPs), minority groups, members of the LGBTQIAP2S+ communities, artists and other creatives, and those with active spiritual lives.
"Tom and I collaborated on wellness events for students at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design. Through trial and variety, we developed a series of events and projects that engaged students and brought serious wellness awareness. And they were fun. So was working with Tom! He is truly a joy. And as an advisor to students, I heard many times how loved he was and how grateful students were about his presence on campus. I too am grateful, for in working with him as a colleague, we developed a wonderful friendship; always something to be thankful for!"— Elizabeth Van Dam, former coworker and collaborator
A fan of lifelong learning, I have explored Gestalt Therapy, Positive Psychology, and Accelerated Experiential Dynamic Psychotherapy. I have also studied Buddhism and Native American teachings for many years. These ancient practices resonate deeply, and inform both my work and the way I live my life.
Teaching is another passion. For professionals, I have presented at international conferences on mindfulness in psychotherapy, and created and co-taught a course titled The Foundations of Mindful Therapy. For laypeople, I have taught courses on happiness, wellness, assertiveness, emotional intelligence, coping with crisis, reducing anxiety, handling change, and optimism, resilience, and more.
While I'd appeared on the radio for years, my very own radio show, The Living Happiness Radio Hour, debuted May 2, 2015, and airs on AM 950 in the Twin Cities as part of Health Connections. The show is a joyful exploration of all things Positive Psychology, and uncovers powerful ways we can optimize our strengths, increase engagement, and live fuller lives of meaning and purpose. Here mindfulness, flow, resilience, and other essential components of the good life are made simple. In addition, I am in the process of developing a new podcast series.
